Food Allergy Awareness Week 2015

Monday, May 4th, Chairman Marty W. Smith in Carroll County, GA signed the Food Allergy Proclamation for Food Allergy Awareness Week on May 10-16, 2015!
We are sharing the full Proclamation. We, West Georgia Food Allergy Support Group and the Chairman Marty Smith, are working for the Proclamation and food allergy awareness be released to the newspaper.

We would love everyone to come show support next year, it is an amazing opportunity to come support something that has changed our lives, and we can help save a life by continuing to bring awareness.


WHEREAS, as many as 15 million Americans have food allergies; nearly 6 million are children under the age of 18.

WHEREAS, research shows that the prevalence of food allergy is increasing among children.

WHEREAS, eight foods cause 90% of all food allergy reactions in the U.S.: shellfish, fish, milk, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, and wheat. Symptoms of a food-allergic reaction can include hives, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, and swelling of the throat.

WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergy results in more than 300,000 ambulatory care visits a year involving children under 18. Reactions typically occur when an individual unknowingly eats a food containing an ingredient to which they are allergic.

WHEREAS, there is no cure for food allergy, and scientists do not understand why. Strict avoidance of the offending food is the only way to prevent an allergic reaction.

WHEREAS, anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may cause death.

WHEREAS, Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) is a national, nonprofit organization & West Georgia Food Allergy Support Group, a Georgia Support Group provider, is dedicated to improving the quality of life and the health of individuals with food allergies, and to provide them hope through the promise of new treatment.

THEREFORE I, Marty W. Smith, Chairman, Carroll County Board of Commissioners do hereby proclaim May 10-16, 2015, Food Allergy Awareness Week in Carroll County and encourage all citizens to become aware of the dangers of food allergies and how to successfully manage food allergies to promote a safer, healthier community.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Carroll County, Georgia, to be affixed to this Proclamation on the 1st day of May 2015.

During the meeting we passed out information from Food Allergy Research & Education, The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Connection Team, FAACT, Skeeter Nut Free,, thank you all for helping with passing information, and pushing for awareness.


Also, President Obama sends greetings for Food Allergy Awareness Week!
This week, as NIAID reaffirms its commitment to help reduce the burden of food allergy, President Barack Obama shares a Presidential Message (PDF) with everyone affected by this condition—those living with food allergy and their families, friends, and communities.



January 21, 2014 Meeting

Hello, West Georgia Food Allergy Support Group Family!
Our first meeting will be at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga 7:00pm January 21st, 2014. We would love for you to attend the meeting. We will be going over what the Support Group goals are, and what we will be doing to help all of our members. Please come to our first meeting. We would love to get to know you, and your family. nochildII

We will going over topics that may be too in-depth for children, and you may be interested in a topic we will be discussing, so we wouldn’t want distractions. You may also have questions regarding your child’s food allergies, and would like to address them without your child in hearing range. However, we will be planning upcoming events just for our food allergy children. Example: One of those events will be an Allergy Friendly Egg Hunt.
